3 Great Reasons To Do Perineal Massage
Help Decrease Your Risk Of Perineal Tearing
Perineal tearing can be really challenging, and the thought of it can be a bit scary. But good news! There is evidence that shows perineal massage during pregnancy can help first time birthers.
Build Your Body Awareness + Birthing Confidence
Your brain makes a lot of connections to your pelvis… but many of these connections change as your pregnancy progresses (this is because there is so much adaptation going on to grow your amazing baby!) Perineal massage can help you physcially connect to your pelvis, which in turn can help fortify the connections between your brain, your body, and your pelvic floor.
Establish Your Pelvic Floor Baseline
Pregnancy and birth are some of the most challenging things your pelvic floor will ever go through! Time spent learning how your unique pelvic floor works before birth can help determine how recovery is going after birth. How do you know if your pelvic floor has changed after birth if you didn’t check it before?
Prepare Your Pelvic Floor For Birth
Birth is unpredictable and often has a few elements of mystery!
However, preparing your pelvic floor before birth can be helpful for many reasons, like possibly lowering your risk of perineal tearing; helping you to build confidence in your body + birth; and really getting to know your pelvic floor muscles.
Also, anything we can do to help decrease the rate of perineal tearing (or to improve our recovery after birth) matters. It matters because perineal tearing can increase your risk of:
- Needing stitches
- Infection
- Having pain after birth, including painful sex
- Bladder leakage (urinary incontinence)
- Bowel accidents (fecal incontinence)
- Postpartum depression
All of these things can make it much more challenging to take care of a new baby.
